Limited Legal Services

Have you ever struggled with using the ORT portal? Are you unsure how to complete a legal notice or don’t know what steps are involved in an eviction?

Fear no more – the Saskatchewan Landlord Association now offers Limited Legal Services to help rental housing providers file online claims and attend hearings on their behalf. If you are a rental housing provider needing assistance with ORT matters such as evictions for rent arrears, security deposit claims, monetary claim, eviction for cause, or other legal form preparation, this is for you.

What are limited legal services? Are we working with a lawyer?

Limited legal services are specific services that our CEO Cameron Choquette is approved to deliver through the Law Society of Saskatchewan’s Limited Licensing Pilot. He is not a lawyer and will never give legal advice.

Rather than worrying about how to file a claim and managing it off the side of your desk, you can trust our team from start to finish. We’re familiar with the ins and outs of ORT and will keep you informed every step of the way.

What services are available?

We’re approved to provide the following services:

  • Basic contracts related to residential tenancies;
  • Matters related to the ORT, including the provision of advice, negotiation and settlement, drafting of documents, and advocacy (attendance and representation); and
  • A proceeding with respect to the enforcement of orders through the Court of King’s Bench as permitted by the Queen’s Bench Rules
  • Services of a Notary Public

Who can access the services?

Rental housing providers of all sizes and forms can access these services. Whether the properties are held personally, in a corporation, partnership, or managed by a property manager, we can still act on your behalf at the ORT.

How do we access the services?

  1. To determine if our services would be beneficial for you, please give us a call so that we can ask you some questions and determine the scope of the legal issue or situation.
  2. You will be required to complete a waiver agreeing to costs, services, and complete a Power of Attorney form for the ORT.
  3. Once we’ve confirmed the recommended response, we will request all required documentation and process, fill out, and file your application with ORT.
  4. You will be required to serve any and all documents related to an ORT claim. We do not serve documents.
  5. We will then attend the hearing on your behalf and ensure we get the best possible result for you.

What do the services cost?

Costs vary by the type of the claim, ranging from $300 – $450 per claim. Other services such as completing forms and notices start at $150 per hour.

For comparison purposes, the average hourly rate for a lawyer is $250 – $450 and Legal Aid costs $92/hour.

Funds will not be taken in advance and there are no contingency fees. If you’d like to file and manage the claim on your own, we continue to provide free member support for all members.
