2024 SKLA Board of Directors Nomination Candidates

The Saskatchewan Landlord Association is holding an election for the 2024 Board of Directors. There are seven vacant spots up for election, two of which are for a one-year term, and five for a two-year term. The Association’s nominating committee approved ten candidates to stand for election. Each member in good standing of the Association will receive one vote. Voting opens on Tuesday, April 16 and will close on Friday, April 26. All votes will be counted and verified, and results will be announced on Monday, May 6.

Each candidate was asked the same three questions on their nomination application.

Candidates for 1-Year Term (2 spots available)
Philippe Chagnon – REALTOR, Coldwell Banker Signature
- I currently own a rental in the city, some of my clients also own rentals either short term or long term.
- To be able to provide real estate needs, helping to make decisions with my perspective.
- SKLA has been growing and sees a great future for more growth, SKLA is providing more and more to its members.
Cindy Covey – Property Manager, Colliers
- My journey in multi-unit residential property management has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate dynamics of the rental housing market. From screening potential tenants to handling maintenance requests and resolving disputes, I have navigated through diverse challenges with professionalism and expertise.
- To engage and participate in initiatives that promote responsible landlord practices, affordable housing and tenant welfare. By working together with stakeholders across various sectors, I am confident that we can make meaningful strides towards creating a more sustainable, equitable, and thriving rental housing landscape for all members of our community.
- By remaining to be adaptive, proactive, and responsive to the changing landscape, the SKLA can continue to serve as a valuable resource and advocate for landlords in Saskatchewan.
Laura Mc Nern – Head, Rental Division, North Prairie Developments
- 11 Years in property management growing the rental division from 15 units to over 1,000. Also a real estate investor with both single and multifamily units.
- To continue to grow the association, add value to the offering through education and training and in general to raise the bar in Saskatchewan in relation to rental housing.
- I believe the future is bright and if we continue to grow and innovate that we can have a huge impact on rental housing in the province.
Brent Sjoberg – President, Avana
- With over 1,000 multifamily rental suites in Saskatchewan, I lead one of the largest multifamily rental housing providers in our province. Our team constructs new projects, has in-house property management and, as an investor, maintains ownership of our projects for long term. Avana is also active and committed to providing affordable housing in all of our projects, with a focus on supporting women and children at risk of domestic violence situations.
- I would like to see SKLA find the opportunity to have a strong advocacy voice for our members, especially given the current housing issues in our country. I would like to contribute to best practices in the industry, allowing SKLA members to build strong and successful businesses, while delivering on the demand for new rental housing. I would like to contribute to strong governance at the board level by contributing my leadership, financial and industry experience.
- SKLA has a great opportunity to be a strong voice for its members in a time where demand for rental housing is significant. As affordability issues remain a significant discussion point, it is critical that SKLA is able to highlight that SKLA members are part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Finally, with the evolution of technology and business practices, SKLA has the opportunity to support its membership in building strong businesses that also make a significant contribution to the communities we live in.
Candidates for 2-Year Term (5 spots available)
Stacey Bloor – Property Manager, ICR Commercial Real Estate
- I have been in residential rentals since 2007. I have been an on-site residential manager for owner operated companies; and I am currently working at ICR Commercial Real Estate as a Property Manager (3rd party management). I have managed rentals in all sectors from high end, mid-range and low-income housing. I have work directly with the hard-to-house sector as well.
- I am wanting to be involved in advocating for landlords and tenants. I want to use my experience and knowledge as a landlord to assist with finding solutions or creating events to provide landlords with educational seminars.
- I believe that the SKLA can continue to shape the rental sector in a positive manner for both the landlords and tenants.
Amanda Bolan – Developer, K + A Capital
- Multifamily Investor, self managing 25 units.
- As a current board member of the SKLA, representing the interests of small to mid-sized landlords, my objectives for re-joining the SKLA board are rooted in a commitment to the sustainable growth and support of our community. Specifically, my goals include: Advocacy and Representation: Continue advocating for policies that balance the needs of small housing providers ensuring a sustainable rental market in Saskatchewan. Community Building and Support: Strengthen the SKLA’s role as a supportive network for landlords. I believe in the power of community to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. My commitment to these objectives is driven by a passion for real estate investment and a belief in the positive impact that informed, supported, and engaged landlords can have on communities across Saskatchewan. Re-joining the SKLA board would allow me the privilege to continue contributing towards these goals, leveraging my experience, knowledge, and network to benefit our members and the broader community we serve.
- I am optimistic and excited about the future of the SKLA. As we move forward, I see an association that continues to grow in both influence and membership, driven by a commitment to excellence and integrity. The future I envision for SKLA is one where we are not just reacting to changes in the industry but are proactive leaders shaping the industry’s future.
Chris Lee – Property Management Broker, Squire Property Management
- My career in property management began in 2013, working with two different firms before establishing my own brokerage – Squire Property Management Inc. My expertise spans a considerable portion of the province’s purpose-built rental inventory, particularly in major centers such as Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert. Over the years, I have been involved with several thousand rental units across these regions. Since the inception of my own brokerage, I have successfully managed an extensive array of properties in Saskatoon, including a mix of long-term rentals, short-term, furnished accommodations, and condominium corporations. Concurrent with my professional endeavors, I attended Edwards School of Business on a parttime basis and, in 2020, obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in accounting. This has provided a distinct balance of academic knowledge and practical, real-world experience. I currently serve as a Committee Member for the Real Estate Insurance Exchange (REIX), an active member of the Saskatchewan Real Estate Association (SRA), and a registrant with the Saskatchewan Real Estate Commission (SREC).
- I am committed to revolutionizing the rental industry by modernizing the way we communicate, applying creative solutions to everyday challenges, and building a team driven by innovation. My vision is to align the evolving expectations of residents with the investment goals of landlords, understanding the distinctiveness of each opposing interest. With my inclination towards thinking outside the box, coupled with my extensive experience and a dedication to applying fresh, imaginative strategies, I aim to guide the SKLA towards realizing its objectives. Together, we will spearhead transformative innovation, advocate for equitable legislation, and provide unwavering support to our community.
- The SKLA is well positioned to effect progressive change that resonates with the current and future landscape of rental housing. Leveraging policy reform, community advocacy, and active membership engagement, the SKLA is in a prime position to lead continuous evolution.
Matt Roberts – Property Manager, Royal LePage Icon Realty
- I have been the property manager for Royal LePage Icon Realty (formerly P.A. Rental & Leasing) for over 4 years. Previously, I was employed by Weidner Investments in Prince Albert for roughly 2 years.
- By joining the board of directors for the SKLA, I would like to gain more of an insight on how the SKLA can help all landlords across the province during some of these challenging times. This information, I can bring back to Prince Albert and Royal LePage and make changed where needed.
- I think the SKLA will be vital in the years going forward. The rental market is an always changing market and having a voice for landlords will be imperative with the always changing landscape.
Donna Singbeil – Property Manager & Consultant, Singbeil Property Management & Consulting
- I have over 25 years experience in property management of various types of properties (corporate furnished accommodation rentals and development, single family and apartment rentals, condominium management & maintenance.
- I have been a member of the SKLA board for a number of years and would like to continue involvement and offering of my experience particularly in governance and policy improvements on behalf of landlords and tenants.
- Over the years of my involvement, I have seen enormous growth and development of the organization and the benefits that are provided to all members. The changes and improvements are in large part a direct result of the CEO, Cameron and the skills he brings to the volunteer board. I am especially excited about the additional benefits and recent joint ventures involving ORT and assistance provided to members with hearings and the upcoming educational programs. I would like to see continuing advocacy for change with provincial government and social services to benefit all landlords and tenants with services and housing issues.
Jeff Trapp – Owner & Operator, Journeypoint Properties
- I have been an investor, buying and managing mostly single-family property since 2004 through our company Journeypoint Properties.
- I have the privilege of being a member of the board since 2013; served as vice president and as a past president and am committed to helping the organization enhance the reach to small operators like myself so they can evolve by education and networking offerings SKLA is launching.
- I am truly excited for the future of the rental housing industry in our province, as the work of the board, engagement of SKLA’s CEO and staff with industry and community partners and continuing to enhance created programs to engage our members and offerings to new avenues. Now more than ever it is hard to know the rules without having SKLA in a landlord’s back pocket! There is more work to do, however and we’re well positioned to make more impact.
